This egg crate convoluted foam is a comfort layer for a Sleep Number® FlexTop King bed with a peak-and-valley surface that adds cushioning and airflow. For people who want both a little extra comfort and support, this HD36-R convoluted foam is a great middle-ground and an economical way to improve the feel of your bed without buying a new one. The convoluted peaks relieve pressure, and the open channels between them circulate air in a way that solid toppers cannot, so it sleeps cooler. Made in the USA.
What size is this? FlexTop King explained
This is made for the FlexTop King. It is one solid King-size foam layer (76" × 80") with a 34" cut from the center of the head running toward the middle, which lets the two heads of the bed raise independently on a FlexFit adjustable base. Even with that head cut, the foam is a single piece with one uniform feel across the whole surface. Choose your height below.
Is your FlexTop bed built from two separate Twin XL pieces?
Some FlexTop beds use two separate Twin XL foam layers (38" × 80" each) instead of one solid piece with a head cut. If that is how yours is built, order two Twin XL toppers from our standard egg crate foam instead. Not sure which you have? Browse our standard foam collection or call us at 610-327-2322.
What this foam feels like
This is a medium feel at 35 ILD — the same firmness as our medium regular foam — but with the convoluted egg crate surface, the peaks give a little extra cushion and the valleys add airflow. A nice feature of egg crate is that it offers two slightly different feels depending on which way you lay it: peaks up gives one feel, and flipping it the other way gives another, so you can try both and keep whichever you prefer.
Which thickness should I order? (sold in 1.5" and 2.5")
Because egg crate comes in half-inch increments, match it to your current foam like this:
- Current foam measures close to 1" — order the 1.5".
- Current foam measures close to 2" — order the 2.5".
- Current foam measures about 3" — the 2.5" will fit, and you can add a separate 1" foam layer now or down the road if you want to fill the rest.
The thickness also affects your shell height. Not sure how that works? See our guide to measuring your Sleep Number bed, or call us at 610-327-2322.

Compare our FlexTop King foams
All of these are cut for the FlexTop King. Here is how the feels compare so you can pick the right one:
| Foam | Feel | Firmness | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft Regular | Plush, sink-in | 12 ILD | Softening a bed that feels too firm |
| Medium Regular | Balanced, original feel | 35 ILD | Most people; firming up a sagging bed (closest to original) |
| Firm Regular | Extra-firm, little give | 50 ILD | Sleepers who want a very hard surface |
| Gel Memory | Contouring, cooler, sink-in | Medium (cradle) | Pressure relief; plush premium feel |
| Latex | Buoyant, responsive, on-top | 29 ILD (medium) | Lively support; durable upgrade (not a Sleep Number foam) |
| Egg Crate (this page) | Light cushion + airflow | 35 ILD | Economical comfort and cooling boost |
Will this fit my bed?
This is made to order for the FlexTop King split-head configuration. Egg crate is often used as a light comfort layer on its own or stacked over another foam. If you want a different surface feel, compare our FlexTop regular foams, plush gel memory foam, or natural latex. If your foam side rails have also softened, rebuild the firm edge with the FlexTop complete rail set. Frequently asked questions
What is egg crate foam used for?
It is a convoluted comfort layer with a peak-and-valley surface that adds cushioning and airflow. It is an economical way to improve the feel of a Sleep Number bed without buying a new mattress, used on its own or stacked over another foam layer.
Does it really have two different feels?
Yes. Egg crate gives a slightly different feel depending on which side you lay facing up, so you can try it both ways and keep whichever feels best to you.
It only comes in 1.5" and 2.5" — which do I order?
Match it to your current foam: if yours measures close to 1", order the 1.5"; if it measures close to 2", order the 2.5". If your current foam is about 3", the 2.5" will fit and you can add a separate 1" foam layer now or later to fill the rest.
Is this one solid piece or two?
It is one solid King-size piece with a 34" cut at the center of the head so the two heads raise independently, giving one uniform feel. If your bed instead uses two separate Twin XL pieces, order two Twin XL toppers from our standard egg crate foam page.
What if the foam is too firm or too soft?
No problem — we offer a 30-day comfort exchange. Return it for a full refund or credit, or keep it and take a one-time 50% off a replacement (most people choose this — nothing to ship back). See our Foam Comfort Exchange & Return Policy for full details.
