Sleep Number® Replacement Foam and Foam Rails

Inside every Sleep Number® bed there are two kinds of foam. The comfort foam lays across the top of the air chambers and rails and is what you feel when you lie down. The foam rails form a firm border around the air chambers that holds them in place and keeps you from rolling off the edge. Over time both break down, which causes dips, a soft middle and sagging edges. Replacing them costs a fraction of a new bed, and every piece is made to order in the USA and shipped free.

Sleep Number® foam FAQs

Which foam feels most like my original Sleep Number® foam?
Medium Regular Foam is the closest to the feel most Sleep Number beds had when they were new, and the safest pick if you are not sure. Firm and Soft Regular Foam make the bed firmer or softer than original.
What is the difference between comfort foam and foam rails?
Comfort foam is the layer that lays across the top of the air chambers and the rails and gives the bed its feel. Foam rails are the firm border that frames the air chambers, holds them in place and gives you edge support.
What height comfort foam should I order?
Measure the foam layer in your bed now. Most beds use 1″ to 4″. If you want a softer feel you can go thicker or stack a second layer, and add the extra height to your cover size if you are replacing the cover too.
Can each side of the bed have a different foam?
Yes. Order the Split Queen (30″ x 80″), Twin XL (for a King) or Split Cal King (36″ x 84″) size in two different foams, one per side, in the same height. Many couples add a full-size gel or latex layer on top. The Sleep Number bed builder does this for you.
Do I need side rails or a complete set?
If only the long sides are sagging or you roll toward the edge, side rails are enough. If the head and foot pieces are also broken down, or you want a center rail between the chambers, order the complete set.
What is the return policy on foam?
You can ship comfort foam back for a refund or exchange, or keep it and get 50% off a different foam. One comfort exchange per customer. See our foam comfort exchange policy.

My husband ordered the firm foam and it was too hard for me. I called and the rep explained all the foam options and helped us land on medium. Their customer service is top notch — if you are not sure which foam to buy, give them a call and let them walk you through it.
