This replacement latex comfort layer is a premium upgrade foam for a Sleep Number® bed — the layer that sits on top of the air chambers and gives the surface its feel. It is 100% natural Dunlop latex: a buoyant, responsive natural rubber that supports you on top of the mattress rather than letting you sink in. It is hypoallergenic and anti-microbial, and its aerated structure breathes well — keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer — for excellent support and pressure relief. Because natural latex is a higher-quality material than standard poly foam, you can expect a longer life from it. Made in the USA.
What this foam feels like
Latex is buoyant and responsive. It does not let you sink in the way memory foam does — the best way to describe it is the feeling of lying on top of your mattress instead of down inside it. Because it springs back quickly, it adjusts as you move, so changing position and turning over takes less effort. At 29 ILD it is a medium firmness, very close to our medium regular foam (35 ILD) — most people who want that medium feel like both foams, and it comes down to the character you prefer. Latex feels quite different from memory foam, and is a little closer to a regular-foam feel, just more lively and supportive.
Good to know: latex is an upgrade foam, not a Sleep Number part
Latex is not carried by Sleep Number and is not used in any Sleep Number model. It is a separate, premium foam we offer as an upgrade. If you are putting latex on top as your comfort surface, know that it will feel different from the original foam your bed came with — buoyant and responsive rather than the standard poly-foam feel. If you want to match the original Sleep Number feel instead, choose our medium regular foam.
A great base layer under gel memory foam
Latex also makes an excellent supportive base beneath a memory-foam top. Pair a 2" gel memory foam top layer with a latex layer underneath and you get the cool, contouring surface of gel sitting on a buoyant, durable, responsive foundation — a higher-quality, longer-lasting base than standard poly foam. Because latex is so resilient, it holds up well as the supporting layer over the long term.
Which thickness should I choose?
The thickness you pick sets how much foam sits over the air chambers, and it also affects your shell height. Most beds use a 2" or 3" comfort layer.
- Match what you have to keep the same shell height — measure your current foam and order the same thickness.
- Go thicker (for example 2" up to 3") for a deeper latex feel, but remember it raises your shell height by the difference, so order a cover to match if you are replacing that too.
Not sure how thickness ties into shell height? Our guide to measuring your Sleep Number bed walks through it, or call us at 610-327-2322.

Will this fit my Sleep Number bed?
Because every layer is made to order, we fit older beds, newer smart-bed models, split and FlexTop setups, and sizes the manufacturer no longer sells — including Split Queen, Expanded Queen, and Split Cal King. If the foam sides of your bed have also softened, many owners refresh the perimeter at the same time with new foam side rails or the full complete rail set. Building a newer smart-bed model? You can build your own comfort layer instead. Browse everything on our Sleep Number foam & rails page or the full Sleep Number repair parts collection.
Frequently asked questions
What does this foam do?
It is a comfort layer that lays on top of the air chambers and gives the bed its surface feel. This natural latex version provides a buoyant, responsive, breathable surface with strong support and pressure relief.
Is latex a Sleep Number foam?
No. Latex is not carried by Sleep Number and is not used in any Sleep Number model. We offer it as a separate, premium upgrade foam. If you want to match the original Sleep Number feel, our medium regular foam is the closest match.
How does latex compare to memory foam and regular foam?
Latex is buoyant and responsive — you rest on top of it and it springs back as you move, which makes turning over easier. Memory foam, like our gel memory foam, cradles you and lets you sink in. Latex feels closer to a regular foam than to memory foam, just livelier. At 29 ILD it is a medium firmness, very close to our medium regular foam.
Can I use latex as a base under gel memory foam?
Yes — it makes an excellent supportive base. A gel memory foam top over a latex base gives you a cool, contouring surface on a buoyant, durable foundation that holds up well over time.
What thickness should I order?
Match the thickness of your current comfort foam to keep the same shell height; most beds use 2" or 3". Going thicker adds a deeper latex feel but raises your shell height by the difference, which matters if you are also replacing the cover.
Will it fit an older or discontinued size?
Yes. Because it is made to order, we can match older, split, and discontinued sizes, including Split Queen, Expanded Queen, and Split Cal King.
What if the foam is too firm or too soft?
No problem — we offer a 30-day comfort exchange. Return it for a full refund or credit, or keep it and take a one-time 50% off a replacement (most people choose this — nothing to ship back). See our Foam Comfort Exchange & Return Policy for full details.
