Refresh your newer-model Sleep Number® smart bed with a fully custom foam rebuild. If your bed has the smooth, stretch-knit top (rather than the older quilted cover), this is the rebuild kit for you. Choose your foam side rails and stack your own comfort layers — pick the feel and the height of each layer to dial in exactly the support and softness you want.

Have a King Split-Head FlexTop bed? FlexTop is a specialty size — a solid foam layer with a 34" cut at the head so each side raises independently. Shop the correct size in our FlexTop Split-Head collection →

How it works

Start by selecting your mattress size, then build your rebuild: foam side rails plus one or more comfort layers. For each comfort layer, choose the feel — Regular foam (Soft, Medium, or Firm), cooler-sleeping Gel Memory Foam, or premium Latex — and the height that fits your comfort budget. Add new foam side rails (or the full complete rail set) to rebuild the firm edge at the same time. Mix and match to recreate or improve your bed's original feel.

Compare the foams you can choose

Here is how the comfort foams compare so you can pick the right layer (or layers) for your rebuild:

Foam Feel Firmness Best for
Soft Regular Plush, sink-in 12 ILD Softening a bed that feels too firm
Medium Regular Balanced, original feel 35 ILD Most people; closest to original Sleep Number feel
Firm Regular Extra-firm, little give 50 ILD Sleepers who want a very hard surface
Gel Memory Contouring, cooler, sink-in Medium (cradle) Pressure relief; plush premium top layer
Latex Buoyant, responsive, on-top 29 ILD (medium) Lively support; durable upgrade (not a Sleep Number foam)
Egg Crate Light cushion + airflow 35 ILD Economical comfort and cooling boost

Smart layering tips

A popular rebuild is a 2" gel memory foam top over a 2" medium regular foam base. Gel is a “mimic” foam — it takes on the firmness of the layer beneath it — so down the road you can change the whole feel by swapping just the inexpensive base layer (a soft base for plusher, a firm base for firmer) instead of rebuying a full-thickness block.

Couples: on a Queen, King, or Cal King you can keep a full gel layer on top and split the base layer into two different feels — each side gets its own firmness while sharing one surface, and either side can be changed later without disturbing the other.

Why a complete rebuild

Over time, the foam in a Sleep Number bed compresses and loses support. Replacing the rails and comfort layers together restores the full feel of the bed for a fraction of the cost of a new smart bed. Every layer ships loose (un-glued) so you can adjust, swap, or re-firm down the road — your bed stays serviceable.

Not sure if this fits your model?

This rebuild is designed for newer Sleep Number smart beds with a smooth, stretch-knit cover (c-series, p-series, i-series, m-series, and Climate models). If your bed has an older quilted top, see our replacement covers and foam and rails instead, or browse the full Sleep Number repair parts collection. Not sure how thickness relates to your shell height? Our guide to measuring your Sleep Number bed walks through it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a comfort layer rebuild?

It is a full replacement of the foam inside your Sleep Number bed — the foam side rails plus the comfort layers that sit over the air chambers. You keep the air chambers, pump, cover, and frame, and replace just the foam that has worn out, restoring the feel for a fraction of the cost of a new bed.

Which foams can I stack?

Any combination of our regular foams (soft, medium, firm), gel memory foam, and latex, over a set of foam side rails. A common build is a contouring gel top over a supportive regular-foam base.

Will this fit an older quilted-top bed?

This rebuild is intended for newer smooth, stretch-knit models. If your bed has an older quilted cover, use our standard cover and foam replacements instead.

Can I change the feel later?

Yes. Because the layers ship loose and un-glued, you can swap a single layer down the road to re-firm or soften the bed without replacing everything.
